Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 at Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artwork and inspiration. Aunt Denise was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could commit the day to literature, art or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered that art can be an effective way to spread the cause of activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught her to say something through the arts. Although DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her family, she always spent summers in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she spent there to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given duty of looking after the house and examining the trash of one of members of the juries. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to go into the public relations industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant at a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. In this role, she launched her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition, she started various marketing and lifestyle websites including her own Urban Beauty Collective.
